Choosing the right rug size does not have to be complicated. Start with your furniture, consider the space around it and use a measuring tape to see what feels right.

Standard size or made-to-measure

Choose a standard size or create a made-to-measure rug for your space. Both are priced by square metre, so you can choose the size that feels right for your home.

Front legs on the rug

Place the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on the rug to create a connected and balanced seating area. This is a trusted choice for many homes.

All furniture on the rug

For a larger seating area, place all furniture on the rug. Leave approximately 30–50 cm of rug around the furniture. This creates a sense of harmony and makes the room feel more spacious.

Furniture around the rug

A smaller rug can sit in the centre of the seating area, with the furniture placed around it. This works particularly well in smaller spaces or when using a rug as an accent.

Leave room for the chairs

When choosing a rug for a dining table, the most important measurement is not the table itself but the space needed for the chairs.

The rug should extend far enough beyond the table that the chairs remain on the rug when they are pulled out. As a simple guide, allow approximately 60 cm beyond the table on all sides.

Match the shape

A rectangular rug works naturally with a rectangular table, while a round rug creates a balanced frame around a round table.

Frame the bed

Place the bed on the rug and let the rug extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed. This creates a balanced frame around the bed and anchors the room.

Under the lower part of the bed

A smaller rug can begin around two-thirds of the way down the bed. This leaves the head of the bed and bedside tables on the floor while creating a soft landing area around the foot of the bed.

Beside the bed

In a smaller bedroom, place a rug on either side of the bed. A simple way to make the room feel more considered and complete.

Leave space around the edges

In hallways and entrances, the rug should leave enough floor visible around its edges to create a clear frame. 

Choose a rug that leaves approximately 10–15 cm of floor visible on each side of the hallway.

For longer hallways, a longer rug creates a natural sense of direction. In an entrance or smaller area, a shorter rug can define the space without making it feel crowded.

Define the space

Use a rug to bring furniture together and create a clear living or dining area within an open-plan space.

The rug does not need to cover the entire room. It simply needs to be large enough to connect the furniture within the area.
